Eat. Drink. Lounge: The Tangiers Grand Opening Party

The past year the North Loop has been exploding, with trendy clothing stores like Arrow and Askov Finlayson, delicious restaurants like Borough and Smack Shack. What's missing? A fusion resto-lounge.

Who is North Loop to disappoint? This weekend, The Tangiers, located in the trendy and historic North Loop neighborhood will be hosting a grand opening weekend party.

We got the opportunity to sit down with one of the owners, Ivy Taheri for a quick Q&A.

What was the concept behind The Tangiers?

The concept of The Tangiers came from a desire to create a unique, eclectic and swanky restaurant and ultra lounge that has a upscale feel but mid range prices. We saw that there were so many places that cater towards either the game going or college crowd or the other end of the spectrum of high end restaurants or places that sell $15 martinis. We aim to be a place that is affordable and appealing to those who want to be in an environment that is visually appealing and won't break the bank.

As for the name of The Tangiers, it was inspired by the movie Casino which is one of my husband (partner Behnad Taheri) and our partners favorite movies. The casino that Sam Rothstein runs in the movie is called The Tangiers so we always said we wanted to use that name for a fun personal touch.

Besides the obvious beauty of the North Loop, why open here versus Downtown or Uptown Minneapolis?

"Our decision to open in the North Loop was dictated by the type of clientele we wanted to reach. The north loop has a beautiful historic feel with loads of residencies but not a broad enough level of entertainment to cater to the volume of people in the area, the age demographic is largely 25-45 and that really encompasses the target market that we think would find our vision and venue the most enjoyable, of course all ages are encourage to come as well."

We took a glimpse inside and found plush furniture, lavish chandeliers, custom art and a unique noshing menu of artisan foods like exotic flat breads, salads, and charcuteries alongside specialty cocktails like their signature cocktail just in time for the summer wrap up: the Strawberry Basil.

What kind of place is Tangiers? Is it a restaurant? A lounge? As per Ivy, "The Tangiers can be your cornerstone of the North Loop neighborhood. We have amazing nightly happy hour and late night happy hour specials with a lively environment and can guarantee you'll love your experience with us."
